The trading card game hobby in 2026: more sets, bigger communities, and less trust in the tools

October 6, 2026 · TCGenius

We track four card games every night: Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, One Piece and Magic: The Gathering. Looking at the last twelve months side by side shows a hobby that's growing fast, and a set of tools that hasn't kept up.

More products than anyone can follow

Counting the sets in our database released between October 2025 and October 2026:

GameSets released in the last 12 months
Yu-Gi-Oh! (TCG)18
Magic: The Gathering (main, Commander and other core products)13
One Piece (boosters and starter decks)13
Pokémon (English sets)7

That's over 50 products, before promos, reprints and Japanese releases. Keeping a deck legal and up to date is now real work, which is why every release date we track sits on one calendar.

Communities are still growing

Subreddit sizes, from GummySearch's tracker in early October 2026:

CommunityMembersChange in a year
r/PokemonTCGabout 1.4 millionup about 214,000
r/magicTCGabout 1.0 millionup about 97,000
r/yugiohabout 991,000up about 47,000
r/OnePieceTCGabout 203,000up about 76%

One Piece is the standout: the smallest of the four, and growing the fastest.

What players complain about

Reading app reviews, forums and community threads, the same complaints come up across every game:

How we're approaching it

TCGenius is built around those complaints:

  1. Checked in code, not trusted to AI. Every card Genny suggests is checked against the live card database, ban list and copy limits before you see it.
  2. Dates on everything. Ban lists show when they were checked, prices show where they came from and when.
  3. Proof over opinion. The simulator plays a deck hundreds of times against real tournament decks, so a grade is backed by games, not vibes.
  4. Free stays useful. Card search, ban lists, release dates, tournament results and export are free.
  5. No AI card art. Genny is our mascot. We don't generate fake card art.

What's next

Genny builds Yu-Gi-Oh! decks today, One Piece decks are in beta, Pokémon is next, and Magic is coming soon. Release dates and card lists for all four are live now, and this blog posts ban list changes, release previews, weekly meta reports and chase cards automatically, straight from the same data.
